Full calf with red leather spine label with "HYMNS" in gilt, 13.5 x 8 cm (5 3/8 x 3 1/8 inches), tight. Ffep torn with loss (blank leaf), "Phineas Morse's Book" in brown ink on second blank leaf. The text is complete and runs [1]-280, vi, [2]. The vi. pp. at the end are a table of first lines; the final text leaf is a 2 pp. catalogue of books sold by the publisher. We reset a small piece of leather at the top of the spine with pH neutral paste. Very good. Hardcover.
One oddity of this hymnal is that the hymns are not numbered. There is no copyright or introductory material; the verso of the title page is blank. Words only, no music.
The printer and bookseller, William Warner, advertises various school book, biographies, the Baltimore Spelling Book; "Catholic Hymns, as arranged by the Catholic Ministry"; "Large Catholic Prayer Book, [True Piety]; New Week's Preparation, for the Episcopal Church; &c.
