Memoir of Susan De Groot. Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union, 1840. [10223]

Black cloth spine with marbled boards, scuffed and worn, lacks the paper spine title label. Old bookplates sometime removed from the end papers. 5 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches. 67 pp., light foxing, light stain in bottom margin. Fair. Hardcover.

Susan Elizabeth De Groot (1823-1839), born at Philadelphia to "a humble life, without any of the advantages of station or education." She became sick at age nine, became blind, recovered, but lingered for five years in a debilitating condition. She was diagnosed with scrofula, a terrible disease associated with tuberculosis; her face became disfigured. The memoir details her sufferings, the attempts at cures, her spiritual progress and then her baptism in August, 1835. Her prayers, efforts at Christian work, final sickness and death, are related.
