William Eldridge Hatcher (1834-1912), a native of Virginia. He was graduated at Richmond College (1858), a year after he had been ordained at the Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Bedford County. After serving as pastor of small congregations he was for twenty-six years the pastor of Grace Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. He was also a writer, editor and lecturer. He served as president of the Board of Trustees of Richmond College, was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and served on boards of other charitable institutions. Among many other publications, he was the author of John Jasper: The Unmatched Negro Philosopher and Preacher (1908).
