Sarah Helen DeKroyft (1818-1915), a native of the Rochester area of upstate New York; a school teacher who was widowed on her wedding day and then suddenly became blind at the age of 27 years. She had an excellent education for a young woman of her time and turned to writing to support herself. This book is a collection of her letters, many of which were written during her one-year stay at the New York Institution for the Blind. They relate the thoughts and experiences of an educated young woman in her first three years of blindness.
