Full sheep with black leather title label & gilt rules to spine, 6 x 9 1/2 inches, binding very good. 566 pp., foxing, one leaf torn with closed tear (no loss of text) diagonally accross the leaf. 32 pp. catalogue of medical books. 153 text illustrations, 2 plates with 27 figures, "making altogether 180 figures [illustrations]." The last picture of the series, the leaf to the right is the one torn. Good.

First American edition, which was published the same year as the first London edition.

William Benjamin Carpenter (1813-1885), English physiologist, invertebrate zoologist, physician & naturalist; he is renowned for his many scientific discoveries, including the theory of ocean circulation. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1835 and M.D. at Edinburgh in 1839. He practiced medicine until 1844, when he devoted his life to scientific research. He was a prodigious researcher and writer in the fields of physiology and zoology.
