The Home was founded in 1863 by Rev. Emanuel Boehringer as a refuge for children whose fathers were killed in the American Civil War. It continues to the present day and has evolved to provide care for orphans and other vulnerable children. This historical account treats with the initial establishment, growth, and ministries of the Orphans' Home up to mid 1907.

It includes the names and years attending of all 857 inmates from 1863 to January 1, 1907.
