Henry Wilkes (1805-1886), b. Birmingham, England; d. Montreal, Canada. He was "chief among those who sought to plant and foster churches of the Congregational order throughout the Provinces of British North America." Wilkes emigrated to Canada with his family in 1820, and in 1828 returned to Glasgow, Scotland, to study under Dr. Wardlaw as preparation for the Christian ministry. He became pastor of the Albany Church in Edinburgh for three years, after which he was sent by the Colonial Missionary Society as their representative in Canada. His ministry in Canada lasted over fifty years, during which time he was a pastor, Secretary of the Missionary Society of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, and for some years the principal of the Congregational College of British North America.
