Maroon cloth, gilt titles & date to spines, 10 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches, bindings with a few minor blemishes but no damage, they are tight. Volume one has an old library bookplate; we do not find any other library matter in or on the set. VI, 2,856 clean pages. Volume four is an extensive, useful index.  Very good. Hardcover.

The set is complete in four volumes and is no. 2 of the series of Washington Papers.

"[This set] covers Washington's correspondence with the military and naval officers of every rank of Continental and State troops, the French auxiliaries, foreign ministers and agents, and officers in the British service...The calendar commences with Washington's memorandum of the British loss at Bunker Hill, 1775, and practically ends with the close of the year 1783. A general entry for the half dozen papers of 1783 relating to the Society of the Cincinnati has been made as properly belonging to the military correspondence of the Commander in Chief, and Maj. Gen. Knox's last report in the beginning of 1784 has been added to round out the correspondence relating to the Army." - Prefatory note.
