Day, Jeremiah. The Christian Preacher's Commission: A Sermon, delivered before The General Association of Connecticut, at Saybrook, June 22, 1831. New Haven: Hezekiah Howe, 1831. First Edition. [10716]

Removed, newly sewn into an acid-free wrapper, 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, 20 pages. Good. Pamphlet.

The text is Ezekiel 33:7, "So then, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word from my mouth, and warn them from me."

Two main points: I. The preacher is to resort directly to the scriptures, to learn what the will of God is; and II. This is to be the subject of his communications to his people.

Jeremiah Day (1773-1867), b. New Preston, Conn.; d. New Haven, Conn. A graduate of Yale College (1795), Day was a Congregational minister who also taught school, including as a tutor at Williams College and Yale College. After travel to Bermuda to recover from tuberculosis, he returned to Connecticut where the climate suited him better, and by 1803 was cured of the disease. He then became professor of mathematics and natural theology at Yale, an institution he became connected with for sixty-nine years. He succeeded Timothy Dwight as president of the college in 1817, and continued in that role until 1846 when he retired. To his surprise, he was immediately elected a member of the corporation of the college, and continued as such until a month before his death in 1867.

Day's books on mathematics, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, navigation and surveying were used by many American students. He also contributed valuable books on the Will and other theological subjects.
