The compiler & editor was Rufus Wilmot Griswold (1815-1857), b. Benson, Vermont; d. New York City. He was an early supporter of American poetry and literature, and his The Poets and Poetry of America (1842) was an influential work on the genre. It included over 80 authors, with pieces by Edgar Allan Poe and Lydia Sigourney. Griswold was a literary critic, magazine & journal editor, and the compiler of several works of poetry.
