The previous owner whose bookplate adorns this volume, was John George Hodgins (1821-1912). b. Dublin, Ireland; d. Toronto, Canada. Hodgins was a civil servant, and author, and an evangelical Christian. He received many accolades for his work in the Canadian education system, his charitable endeavours, and his text books. There is a lengthy entry for him at the Dictionary of Canadian Biography online.

Rev. Elam Rush Stimson (1824-1888), Church of England clergyman, editor of the Toronto periodical "Church Herald," for some years the minister at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Kitchner, Ontario.
