Black cloth with blindstamped pattern, spine in gilt, worn with fraying at the ends & corners, 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches. Rear end paper signed, "A. Talcott, Guilford, Conn., July 18th, 1843, with "Alvan Talcott" in pencil on the ffep. 192 pp., some smudges & foxing, with many plates & illustrations. Good. Hardcover.

The previous owner was Alvan Talcott, M.D. (1804-1891). He graduated from Yale College in 1824 and then taught school while studying medicine, returning to Yale Medical School and earning his degree in 1831. By 1841 he had a medical practice in Guilford, Connecticut. In 1888 he established a professorship of Greek in his name at Yale and willed his surgical instruments and medical books to the Yale Medical School. Talcott had a deep interest in history and genealogy, and wrote several genealogical studies of Guilford families.

A history of Yale College with a descriptive account of life as a student, written by a student. Includes anecdotes of college life, such as Tutoring the Freshemn, Society Electioneering, Bullyism, Pipes and Tobacco, Ringing the Bell, Mading Obeisance, The Medical Students and the Cow, The Plunder of the Gates, &c.

Attributed to Ezekiel Porter Belden (1823-1911), b. Wethersfield, CT; d. Harlem, NY. Belden graduated at Yale College in 1844 and opened a law practice in Ossining, NY, but was chiefly engaged as an author, and a legal and general editor. He was editor of both the New York Journal of Commerce and the New York Shoe and Leather Reporter
