Teal cloth, faded decoration in brown & gilt, 6 x 4 1/2 inches, front end papers with thin tide mark at edges, none elsewhere. 62 unnumbered pages plus illustrations; frontispiece signed "Mary." Text is generally clean with a few smudges; foxing to the end papers. Good. Hardcover.

Illustrations by Mary Artemisia Lathbury (1841-1913), American poet, hymnwriter, and artist. She taught art and was a frequent contributor to religious periodicals, and was known as "the poet laureate of Chautauqua."

The wood engraver of the illustrations was Henry Hobart Nichols (1838-1887), a specialist in scientific illustrations who was based in Washington, DC. Nichols was the illustrator for many government reports of science and exploration. He made many engravings of the American Indians of the West, for various Ethnology Reports.
