Rev. Nehemiah Adams, D.D. (1806-1878), b. at Salem, Mass., Congregational minister and author. He was educated at Harvard and Andover Theological Seminary, and from 1834 until his death was pastor of the Essex Street Church in Boston. He published many works including a Life of John Elliot. He was a defender of Southern slavery as an institution beneficial to the religious character of the Negro, in his A South-Side View of Slavery (1854), and The Sable Cloud, a Southern Tale with Northern Comments (1861), both of which enraged the abolitionists.
