The first 58 pp. is the Nebraskan story of "Bishop Sunbeams," a young lad who brightened everyone's path with his optimism and cheer. The other twenty stories are also set in Nebraska, and by "stories" we don't necessarily mean fiction. Such titles as The Master of Verbena Lodge, The Invisible Playmate, The Surgeon of the Seventh Illinois, Father and Son, Man's Trusted Friend, McGuffey and His Pupils, and Educating the Heart.

Richard Lee Metcalfe (1861-1954), Nebraska newspaperman, politician, and businessman, a close associate of William Jennings Bryant. He served as mayor of Omaha, but was unsuccessful in his bids for the US Senate and for the governor's office of Nebraska.
