George Ticknor (1791-1871), b. & d. at Boston, Massachusetts. He was for 16 years the professor of French and Spanish languages at Harvard. He also modernized the curriculum of the college. His expertise in the Spanish language led him to produce the first comprehensive study of Spanish literature (1849). He was a founder of the Boston Public Library to which he bequeathed a valuable collection of books. Ticknor traveled extensively in Europe (1815-19) and (1835-38); these travels are written of in his Life, Letters, and Journals (1876).
