John Howard Payne (1791-1852), b. New York City; d. Tunis, Tunisia. Payne was an actor, poet, and playwright. His opera "Clari, the Maid of MIlan" included the song "Home Sweet Home," which became exceptionally popular. It is presented here with illustrations by Lizabeth. B. Humphrey.
Elizabeth Bullock Humphrey (1841-1889), b. Hopedall, Massachusetts; d. Hamilton, Bermuda. One of the first women to receive recognition as an illustrator in the United States, she studied drawing and painting at Cooper Union in Philadelphia. She was skilled in the new technique of photogravure, and produced illustrations for St. Nicholas Magazine, Oliver Optic's Magazine, greeting cards, gift books, &c.
