John Heyl Vincent (1832-1920), b. Tuscaloosa, Alabama; d. Chicago, Illinois. Vincent was a minister and was elected bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church (1888); he was one of the co-founders of the Chautauqua Institution and its first chancellor. He was the corresponding secretary of the Methodist Sunday-School Union and editor of its publications from 1868 to 1884. He was the author of several books on the Bible and on education.
