Henry Cowles, D.D. (1803-1881), born at Norfolk, Connecticut; graduated at Yale in 1826; ordained as an evangelist in 1828 at the Congregational Church in Hartford; served as pastor of several congregations in Ohio. In 1835 he was made Professor of Greek and Latin at Oberlin College - one of the founding faculty members - and in 1838 he was Professor of Ecclesiastical History, Church Polity, and Old Testament Language and Literature in that school. From 1848 to 1862 he was editor of The Oberlin Evangelist, and he was also the author of several books on holiness as well as a sixteen-volume commentary of the Bible.
