Charles Carleton Coffin (1823-1896), b. Boscawen, New Hampshire; d. Brookline, Massachusetts. A journalist and war correspondent, he was perhaps the best-known newspaper reporter of the American Civil War. Later historians have called him "the Ernie Pyle of his era." Coffin was present at the battles of Bull Run and at Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and at many important points in between.
