This collection begins with Latin letters of the 11th century (with English introductions); by Letter XXVI. (p. 61 of vol. i.) we begin ancient letters in English, at the beginning of the reign of Henry the Fifth (AD 1417). The original spellings are retained, each with an introduction by Sir Ellis.
Sir Henry Ellis, KH, FRS, FSA (1777-1869), English antiquarian and librarian, for many years the principal librarian of the British Museum. He was the founder of the Royal Numismatic Society.
