The illustrator is John Karst (1836-1922), b. Bingen, Germany; d. De Bruce, NY. He was a wood engraver whose illustrations were used in the book trade.
Rossiter Worthington Raymond (1840-1918), b. Cincinnati, Ohio, a captain during the American Civil War. Raymond was a mining engineer by trade who was also a devout Christian, is credited with writing several stories for children, a Paraphrase of Job, and several hymns. A Congregationalist, he was associated with the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn.
