Emily, an only child, fifteen years old, is sent to live with her aunt for a year while her invalid mother is taken to the south of France by her father with hopes of the mother's recovery. She meets her four cousins and the tale is about their lives, with a Christian home being a new experience for Emily. When reunited with her mother upon her return, all have become Christians. The setting is in or near Worcester, Massachusetts.
