The author, Samuel Francis Smith (1808-1895) of the First Baptist Church of Newton, was a collaborator with Baron Stow in compiling The Psalmist: A New Collection of Hymns for the Use of Baptist Churches. A Harvard College and Andover Theological Seminary graduate, Smith was the pastor of several churches in New England during his ministry. As a hymn-writer, he is best known as the author of the lyrics for "My Country, 'Tis of Thee."
