New Arrivals, February 2023

In 1975 two young seminary graduates (now Dr. A. Merril Smoak, Jr. and Dr. Terry York) entered a book shop in Sacramento, California, which Dr. Smoak remembers as Capital City Rare Books. As was their practice, they asked the owner if he had any old hymnals, explaining that they would be words only and look like little poetry books.  The owner disappeared into a back room and returned with a little book wrapped in plastic.  It had a Boston imprint and the date of 1744; he asked $100 for it.  There was no mention of it being a Bay Psalm Book.  The price was very high for the two young men and they turned him down.  After returning home Mr. Smoak looked through one his seminary texts, Music and Musicians in Early America, by Lowens.  He was excited to see that the title he had just seen at the book shop matched the title of a Bay Psalm Book!  He phoned his friend and told him to go make a deal for the book.  His friend Terry York was able to work out a plan with the owner to pay for it over a few months, each contributing $6.25 per month. The book could not be picked up until it had been paid for in full.  It has been in their co-possession until it was recently sold by Haaswurth Books.  Here is the link if you would like to have a look at it.

Some friends of ours have begun translating and publishing the works of St. Tikhon, Bishop of Voronezh and Wonderworker of Zadonsk (1724-1783).  They are rich examples & instruction in the Orthodox Christian way of life.  Librarians especially please note that these are the first English translations from the Russian and are just published; it is unlikely that you already have them.  They are being sold on eBay, link here.  A life of St. Tikhon is published on the OCA website, link here.  Haaswurth Books does not receive any recompense for promoting the books; in fact, we did not tell them that we were going to promote them.

We have selected some of the better items from our Hymnals & Music catalogue to showcase here (click this link).  In almost every case we did not find another copy for sale when we catalogued the item.  We have carefully examined every book and have noted all found defects.

Advice from a colleague and additional research have caused us to review our listing and price for the 1764 First American Edition of the Heidelbergh Catechism.  Here is the link, with a reduced price.

Here is a list of items that have been added to our website recently.  The list is alphabetical, and not grouped by subject or price.  Click the number [in brackets] to go to the sale page.
