Samuel H. Dean, of Caroline, Tioga (now Tompkins) County, New York. He states that he wrote this when close to death as advice to his family, and after his recovery had it published. He lived for some years after, as he appears on the 1840 Federal Census at the head of a familiy of 7 persons, his employment being agriculture. We find reference to an "Elder Dean" performing a marriage nearby in 1831. It may be the same person. - Miscellaneous Marriages of Tompkins County, online. He is recorded as being one of the supervisors of Caroline, NY, 1832-34.
