1755 Boston Psalms Hymnal, Brady & Tate, with engraved music scores

Full leather binding, blind tooled panels front and back, raised spine with five panels, the spine is without decoration or title. 4 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches, binding rubbed and edge-worn with cord edges showing, but without cracks and with good hinges and joints. Pencil shading to title on tp. Pp. (2) 3-276 (2) 278-336. Followed by 16 leaves of engraved music scores. P. 333 misnumbered as 373 & p. 336 misnumbered as 376. Complete, with original end papers and paste-downs. Text very good, occasional light spotting, text block tight. End paper doodles include a masted ship, anchors, signature of Samuel Dexter Ward (1801), and lines in Latin. Good.   [ABE2079]

Appendix, containing A Number of Hymns, Taken chiefly from Dr. Watts’s Spiritual Collection,” title page without imprint, is pp. 277-278. The bottom of the first music leaf has printed “Engrav’d Printed & Sold by Thomas Johnston, Brattle Street, Boston 1755.”
